Season Six Show No. 143 Inside Great Lakes Sailing - Richard Gladwell New Zealand Sail World Editor

Show Details

When you meet your heroes, and the experience is better than you dream, don't look over your shoulder. Inside Great Lakes Sailing managed to land legendary sail racing reporter Richard Gladwell, who acts as the sailing editor for New Zealand's version of Sail-World.com, the world's largest online sailing news network. The New Zealand native chatted with us from Auckland on a workday afternoon, while it was the previous evening here in Detroit. Mr. Gladwell has provided coverage of most of the contentious dialogue between the 2027 America's Cup principals the last several months and we thought we'd take a moment and get the inside scoop. The likable 73-year-old has covered the sport since 1983 in print, before landing online in 2005. Gladwell has covered 10 Olympic Games, a dozen America's Cup challenges and numerous global sail races of various types since 1983. In this episode he talks about his background, the 2027 America's Cup, women's sailing at the highest levels of the sport, how the media is treated in sailing circles, the general state of the sport and the Kiwis' talent development in a wide ranging discussion. And we spend a few moments covering the 2025 Detroit Cup, sponsored by Bayview Yacht Club, which is part of the World Match Racing Tour, so stay tuned.
